A. GNERAL PRINCIPLES
1.The 4th China Shanghai International Piano Competition is to be held
from Saturday 3rd to Thursday 15th November 2007 in Shanghai
Oriental Art Center, China. It is organized by China Shanghai
International Piano Competition Organizing Committee, and presented by
The Center For China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Shanghai
Oriental Art Center and Shanghai Awing Arts Co., Ltd.
2. The jury consists of eminent musicians of high international status.
Decisions made by the jury at all stages of the competition are final.
3. The competition has three separate stages. No more than six
competitors will be advanced to the Final Stage.
4. All stages of the competition may be recorded and/or videotaped by
the Competition Organizing Committee for further usage. Rights in any
competition performance, recordings or films, belong to The Competition
Organizing Committee and no fee is payable to any competitor on
account of these performances or any recordings or broadcasts of them.
B. RULES
1. The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities between the age
of 16-28 (born before 2nd November 1991 and after 3rd November 1979).
2. Repertoire must be played from memory. The order of pieces and the
repeats can be determined by the competitor himself/herself.
3. Competitors will be required to submit their repertoire with their application form. The repertoire may not be altered after 20th September 2007.
4. The competitor must arrive in Shanghai on 2nd November 2007 and register at the appointed venue.
5. The playing order of competitors will be determined by ballot before the first stage and will be adhered to in the all four stages. All the competitors must arrive on time at the appointed venue for their performances in the competition.
6. Any competitor who makes an attempt, or on whose behalf an attempt is made, to communicate with any member of the Jury may be disqualified.
7. The Chinese text of this brochure is definitive.

(Applicants should retain copies of all material sent, as the Competition Organizing Committee cannot accept responsibility for any documents lost and no material will be returned. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.)

With the following enclosure:
¡¤Photographs. Three passport-size (40mm x 50mm) and two black and white (8*10cm) suitable for publicity purpose. As these photographs may be used for press and program reproduction, it is important that they are not pinned or stapled to the application form.
¡¤A photocopy of applicant¡¯s identification card or passport.
¡¤Curriculum vitae. To include typewritten details of musical education (schools, teachers and relevant dates), prizes won at other competitions with photocopies of programs and press reviews accompanied wherever possible by their English or Chinese translations.
¡¤One video tape or disc of the applicant¡¯s recent performance, signed by the applicant and certified by another musician.
The program of the video must include:
(1) Two virtuoso etudes, including one Chopin Etude.
(2) One Preclude & Fugue from the Well-tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach.
(3) One movement from a classical sonata.
(4) One piece of the applicant¡¯s own choice (about 10 minutes).
¡¤References: Applicants should obtain, from two musicians of standing who are willing to support their application to enter the Competition.
D. Entry Fee
On the basis of the videos and the documents provided by the applicant, the Competition Organizing Committee will make a preliminary screening audition and decide on the applicant¡¯s admission.
The applicant will be notified of the result by fax, mail or E-mail on 1st September, 2007. Upon receiving the admission notice, the applicant must remit an application fee of US$60 by money order or check no later than 20th September 2007 (according to the postmark). Chinese citizens living in Mainland may pay the equivalent amount in RMB according to the intraday exchange rate. Remittance should be addressed to:

Upon receiving the application fee, the Competition Organizing Committee will confirm the applicant¡¯s admission to the competition on 30th September 2007.
E. Accommodation/Transport
1. The accepted competitors from Europe, America, Australia and Africa will be given a travel allowance of US$500 by the Competition Organizing Committee; the accepted competitors from Asian countries, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau will be given a travel allowance of US$250. The competitors from Mainland China not including those from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu province will be given a travel allowance of 300 RMB.
2. Accommodation for all the competitors during their competition period (from 2nd November, 2007 to the end of his/her participation) will be covered by the Competition Organizing Committee as follows:
a) The competitors who do not enter the Semi-final Stage will be hosted until the morning after the Preliminary Stage.
b) The competitors who do not enter the Final Stage will be hosted until the morning after the Semi-final Stage.
c) All the finalists will be hosted until the morning after the Award Ceremony.
3. Any expenses for the travel, accommodation and meals of the person(s) accompanying the competitors will be paid by themselves. The Competition Organizing Committee can make arrangements for the accompanying person(s) at certain designated hotels.
